About This Program

Auto technicians and mechanics inspect, maintain, and repair cars and light trucks. This program is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed to service, troubleshoot, and repair basic automotive systems. The class time will be divided into two parts – course content and hands-on shop time which will allow our students to diagnose, repair and do tune-ups/inspections, to name a few.

Auto Industry and Safety

This course is designed to teach the students about the auto industry and particularly about how to be
safe while working in the field.

Method of Instruction: Blended Learning

Tools, VIN and Inspections

Students will be shown various tools and how to do various inspections.
Program prerequisites: Passing grade on Introduction and Safety Program

Program Outline

  • Vehicle lifting and hoisting
  • NYS Inspection
  • Shop tools and equipment
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • 21-point-vehicle inspection (bumper to bumper)
  • Torch, Cutting and Grinding Safety

Diagnostics and Wipers

Students will be taught how to read diagnostics and how to replace wipers.
Program prerequisites: Passing grade on Introduction and Safety Program

Program Outline

  • Basic electrical diagnostics
  • Dashboard warning lights and symbols
  • Wiper blade removal and installation
  • Battery and electrical system
  • Bulb service

Brakes and Tires

Students will learn how to repair and replace brakes as well as fixing tires.
Program prerequisites: Passing grade on Introduction and Safety Program

Program Outline

  • Brake diagnostic and repair
  • Mounting and balancing of tires
  • Alignments

Oil Changes and Tune-ups

Students will learn to change the oil and conduct a tune-up.
Program prerequisites: Passing grade on Introduction and Safety Program

Program Outline

  • Vehicle Tune up
  • Oil changes
  • Under-hood inspection
  • Air filter service
  • Cooling system service
  • Fuel and Induction service
  • Automatic, manual transmission, differential and transfer case service
