Emergency Medical Technician Refresher

Program Description

The primary focus of the Emergency Medical Technician Refresher is to provide review and remediation of basic emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical system. The program will provide students who have met all requirements for completing an EMT program and need additional instruction and reinforcement for success on the New York State exam.

Course Content

Orientation for EMT ALHE 3100

This course will provide students with situational awareness and emergency medical services (EMS) systems.

  • Learn Roles/responsibilities/professionalism of EMS personnel
  • Understand quality improvement
  • Understand patient Safety

Method of Instruction: Blended Learning

Workforce Safety and Public Health Awareness; CALS 1000

This course is designed for students to become familiar with the overall aspects of workforce safety and wellness; understand legal issues and matters affecting infectious diseases.

Course Outline:

  • Understand standard safety precautions
  • Use personal protective equipment
  • Maintain stress management/deal with death and dying
  • Understand and apply preventative measures to avoid work-related injuries
  • Apply proper techniques for lifting and moving of patients
  • Understand disease transmission
  • Understand and practice wellness principles

HazMat Awareness

This course will give students an awareness of hazardous materials.

Course Outline:

  • Understand risks and responsibilities of a cold zone
  • Understand other related special incidents

Trauma

This course will provide fundamental knowledge of basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely injured patient.

Course Pre-requisites: none

Course Outline:

  • Understand and apply trauma scoring to assess and manage the patient
  • Know and understand rapid transport and destination issues
  • Determine transport mode

Medical Emergencies and Overview

This course will provide fundamental knowledge of basic emergency care and transportation based on assessment findings for an acutely ill patient.

Course Pre-requisites: none

Course Outline:

  • Understand the difference between medical emergencies and trauma emergencies
  • Name the various categories of common medical emergencies
  • Describe the evaluation of the nature of illness
  • Understand and apply assessment of the patient
  • Explain the importance of transport time and destination selection for the patient

Responding to Special Patient Populations

This course applies a fundamental knowledge of the growth, development, and aging processes as well as assessment findings to provide basic emergency care and transportation for a patient with special needs.

  • Understand and be familiar with the various classifications of special patient populations: obstetrics, neonatal, pediatric, geriatric, and patients with special challenges

Orientation to FEMA Incident Command System

This course will introduce students to FEMA’s Incident Command System (ICS), which is a standardized, on-scene, all-hazards incident management approach.

Course Outline:

  • Allows for the integration of facilities, equipment, personnel, procedures and communications operating within a common organizational structure.
  • Enables a coordinated response among various jurisdictions and functional agencies, both public and private.

This course is designed to provide students with review of the course and practice of skills necessary for the EMT certification process.

Course Pre-requisites: Completion of all required courses.
